About Applied Sorting

Our Business

Applied Sorting Technologies is Australia’s longest established manufacturer of x-ray food inspection equipment.

More than 12 years of innovative product development and a reputation for building robust, reliable equipment has helped Applied Sorting establish a comprehensive base of satisfied customers, including many of Australia’s leading meat processors and food manufacturers.

As well as manufacturing and selling x-ray food inspection equipment, Applied Sorting also provides an x-ray food inspection service. Products suspected of containing contaminants can be inspected either at the Applied Sorting works in Bulleen, Victoria or at the client’s own premises.

The company’s Australian based team of engineers and scientists, all specialists in x-ray inspection enables it to provide levels of before sales and after sales technical support that can’t be matched by other suppliers. Its local product development capability allows Applied Sorting to pursue an active program of product innovation and to custom build machines for special applications. Using its own innovative equipment designs and locally developed software, Applied Sorting can provide the one stop solution to all your x-ray food inspection needs:

Applied Sorting also manufacture a range of advanced electronic carcass stimulation systems. Developed by Applied Sorting in association with Meat and Livestock Australia for distribution worldwide through the Realcold group these products are being applied by leading abattoirs to improve operator safety and to improve the tenderness and eating quality of their products.

The Applied Sorting engineering team have over 25 man years experience developing and building ore sorting machines for mining operations. The company has recently introduced an innovative x-ray transmission sorter capable of looking inside rocks to determine their mineral content so that sub economic material can be rejected without further processing. Applied Sorting can also provide essential sensing components and technical support to organisations wishing to use or investigate conductivity/magnetic response sorting.

Our Background

Applied Sorting Technologies Pty Ltd (AST) was founded in mid-1992 by its current directors.

The Directors were key technologists for RTZ Ore Sorters' New Product Development division in Melbourne, Australia, during the 1970's. They were instrumental in developing, during that period, industry-standard mineral sorting machines such as the M16 Photometric Sorter and the M17 Radiometric Sorter.

Following the relocation of the Ore Sorters R&D effort to America in 1981, the Directors developed under contract to Argyle Diamond Mines Pty Ltd (ADM)a new series of high performance X-ray diamond sorting machines. They carried this project forward from an initial investigation of diamond properties, through to a successful pilot machine demonstration. This led to the setting up of CRA Group Special Equipment (GSE), with the Directors as joint management team charged with the establishment and operation of a small but highly focused and motivated development and manufacturing group in Preston, Victoria.

At GSE the Directors carried out the development, production engineering, manufacture and installation of more than 20 X-ray diamond sorting machines for ADM. For this work the Directors were awarded the 1986 CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement - the first to be awarded outside the CSIRO.

Shortly after starting operations in 1992 AST was given the opportunity to apply its X-ray expertise to developing contaminant detection systems for export beef. In 1995 AST’s X-ray machines were evaluated alongside two imported systems by what was then Australian Meat Technology Pty Ltd. The AST machines significantly out performed their competitors and since that time AST have been the market leaders in X-ray inspection systems for beef in Australia.

At about the same time AST commenced development work on carcase stimulation systems and has been at the forefront of this field since releasing it’s first products for sale in 1994.
